Supporting a Loved One Through Depression

March 10, 2026 · SIIOBH Team

Watching someone you care about struggle with depression can be difficult, and it’s natural to want to help. While you can’t “fix” depression for someone else, your support can still make a real difference.

Listen without judgment

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is simply listen. Avoid rushing to offer solutions or minimizing what they’re feeling. Letting them know they’re heard can mean a lot.

Encourage professional support

Gently encouraging a loved one to talk to a therapist or doctor can be helpful, especially if symptoms are persistent. You might offer to help them find resources or even go with them to an appointment if that feels appropriate.

Take care of yourself too

Supporting someone through depression can be emotionally taxing. Make sure you’re also looking after your own wellbeing, and don’t hesitate to seek support for yourself if you need it.

When to seek immediate help

If your loved one talks about wanting to harm themselves or expresses thoughts of suicide, take it seriously. Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an emergency.
