Starting therapy for the first time can feel a little intimidating — but knowing what to expect can help ease some of that uncertainty.
Before your appointment
You’ll typically complete some paperwork ahead of time, including basic intake forms and information about your insurance. This helps your therapist get a general picture of your background before you meet.
During the session
Your first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what’s bringing you in, your history, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. There’s no pressure to share everything right away — this is a conversation, not an interview.
After the session
By the end of your first visit, you and your therapist will usually have a general sense of how to move forward, including how often you might meet and what approaches could be helpful. Therapy is a collaborative process, and it’s okay to ask questions or share feedback along the way.
If you’re considering therapy for the first time, reaching out is often the hardest part — and we’re glad to help make the rest feel a little easier.
